Ja Morant: Memphis guard assumes "accountability" following suspension for a gun video
Posted : 18 May 2023
Ja Morant, a standout for the Memphis Grizzlies, was punished for the second time for seeming to possess a pistol in a social media video, but he now claims "full accountability" for his behaviour.
During a live Instagram video on Saturday, Morant, 23, and a companion seemed to hold up a pistol for a brief period of time in a car.
After a video surfaced in March showing him brandishing a pistol at a Colorado bar, he was also banned for eight games.
"I know I've disappointed a lot of people who have supported me," he said.
"This is a journey and I recognise there is more work to do. My words may not mean much right now, but I take full accountability for my actions. I'm committed to continuing to work on myself."
Although the event is under investigation, NBA commissioner Adam Silver stated he was "assuming the worst."
"We spoke for a long time about not just the consequences that it could have on his career but the safety issues around it. He could have injured, maimed, killed himself or someone else with an act like that," Silver said.
"He has an incredibly huge following. My concern, that I thought he shared with me, that tens of millions of kids globally would see him as having done something that was celebrating in a way, that act of using a firearm in that fashion."
All-Star guard Morant expressed regret and "full responsibility" for his behaviour after the incident in March, and he also sought counselling while he was sidelined.
The nightclub event was looked into by the Glendale Police Department, but not enough evidence was uncovered to bring any charges.
The Grizzlies are out of the playoffs after losing to the Los Angeles Lakers in the first round last month, thus Morant would miss the start of the 2023–24 season if he received another ban.
