Italy's Gianmarco Pozzecco excels at FIBA World Cup 2023, valuing players' confidence and trust

Posted : 01 September 2023
Gianmarco Pozzecco, the passionate and energetic coach of Italy's basketball team, has captured attention at the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023. While known for his animated antics on the sidelines, including getting ejected from games and wild gestures, it's his love for his players that shines through. Italy's players feed off his positivity and energy, valuing the confidence and trust he instills in them.

Pozzecco's coaching prowess often goes unnoticed amidst the excitement. He had a successful playing career as a point guard, winning titles in Italy, playing in Spain and Russia, and earning an Olympic silver medal with the Italian national team. His coaching journey began at the age of 40, and he led Dinamo Sassari to victory in the FIBA Europe Cup in 2019.

Taking over as the head coach of the Italian national team in 2022, Pozzecco led Italy to a surprising victory over Serbia in the FIBA EuroBasket 2022 Round of 16. Despite being ejected during that game, his team nearly upset France in the Quarter-Finals.

This summer, Italy has excelled under Pozzecco's guidance, winning 11 of 12 games, including a perfect 9-0 record in exhibition games before the World Cup. Players recognize his excellence in game planning and team management, highlighting his deep understanding of the game and player psychology.

While Pozzecco's animated reactions on the sidelines may garner attention, his coaching abilities and winning strategies have made him a standout coach in the basketball world, adding "winner" to his description as Italy performs impressively at the World Cup.
