Imo State Basketball Association begins holiday programme for young boys, girls

Posted : 24 July 2024

The stage is set for the 2nd edition of the Imo State Basketball Holiday Programme, targeting boys and girls aged 9-18 years. This initiative aims to nurture young talent and promote the fundamentals of basketball among the youth in Imo State. By providing a structured and engaging environment, the programme seeks to develop future basketball stars and instill a love for the game in the participants.

The Secretary of the Imo State Basketball Association, Obi Nkechi, announced on Wednesday that letters have been dispatched to schools across the state, inviting students to participate in this holiday programme. She emphasized that this initiative will equip game masters and mistresses with essential basketball skills, enabling them to effectively teach the sport when they return to their respective schools. This educational approach ensures that the knowledge gained during the programme will be disseminated widely, benefiting a larger number of students.

The programme will be conducted by experienced coaches, including Fubara Humphrey Onyanabo, who is currently serving on a national assignment with the U-18 national team. The involvement of such high-caliber coaches will provide participants with top-notch training and exposure to advanced basketball techniques. This mentorship from national and state team coaches is expected to inspire and motivate the young players, giving them a glimpse of the possibilities in the sport.

Scheduled from August 13th to 17th, the basketball festival will take place at the Imo State Basketball Court at Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri. The daily sessions will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., providing ample time for intensive training and skill development. The choice of venue and the timing of the sessions are designed to maximize participation and ensure a conducive learning environment for all attendees.

The holiday programme aims to create a festival-like atmosphere, celebrating the sport of basketball and encouraging young players to pursue their passion. Through a mix of drills, practice games, and educational sessions, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the game. This holistic approach ensures that the young athletes not only improve their physical skills but also develop a strategic and tactical understanding of basketball.

One of the key objectives of the programme is to identify and nurture emerging talent in Imo State. By providing a platform for young players to showcase their abilities, the Imo State Basketball Association hopes to discover potential stars who can represent the state and possibly the nation in the future. The programme serves as a scouting ground for coaches and selectors, who will be on the lookout for standout performers.

The Imo State Basketball Holiday Programme represents a significant step towards grassroots development in sports. By investing in the youth and providing them with high-quality training opportunities, the state is laying a strong foundation for the future of basketball. The success of this initiative will be measured not only by the immediate impact on the participants but also by the long-term growth and achievements of basketball in Imo State.
