The third edition of the Dreams Basketball tournament tipped off on Monday at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium in Ibadan, with 10 clubs competing for honors in both male and female categories.
The participating teams comprise eight male and two female clubs.
The male clubs are: Hoop Dreams Nigeria, Showtyme of Ibadan, University of Ibadan, Liberty Spears Ibadan, and Egbeda Local Government Basketball of Ibadan. Others include D'warrior of Lagos, Vision Basketball of Abeokuta, and Raptors Basketball Academy of Lagos.
The female teams are: Oluyole Babes of Ibadan and Amazon of Lagos.
Coach Dayo Emmanuel of Hoop Dreams expressed confidence that his team is determined to defend the title they won in the last edition.
Emmanuel stated, "Every champion aims to remain on top. No champion wants to decline. We are here with the same mentality and spirit as last year. We are here to defend our title. We have put in a lot of effort in our training ahead of the competition. We have covered all the necessary preparations to retain the title. The players are in good shape; we have collectively done our part. As a coach, I have fulfilled my role. Now it's up to the boys to prove themselves on the court."
The tournament is sponsored by Tunji Soroye, a former national basketball player.
According to the organizers, the winner in the male category will receive N600,000, while the second-placed team will get N400,000. The female category champion will receive N300,000, with N200,000 going to the second-placed team.
In some of the matches played so far, Showtyme Hoopers defeated Hoop Dreams Nigeria 46-39. Similarly, the University of Ibadan overcame Liberty Spears 59-4, while Raptors Basketball Academy of Lagos defeated Egbeda Local Government Basketball Club 40-27.
