Despite a 63-57 loss to France, Great Britain's women's basketball team has advanced to the knockout stages of the Women's EuroBasket tournament.
An unexpected victory over the host nation, Slovenia, had put Great Britain in a favorable position. Additionally, Slovenia's subsequent loss to Germany ensured Great Britain's progression.
In their final group game, Great Britain will face Germany on Sunday, which will play a role in determining their opponent in the next round.
Chema Buceta's team gave France a tough challenge, managing to equalize the score at 35-35 before the second-ranked team in Europe pulled ahead and established a nine-point lead by the end of the third quarter.
Captain Temi Fagbenle was the top scorer for Great Britain, contributing 20 points and eight rebounds as they reduced the deficit to six points. Migna Toure scored 15 points for France.
With the victory, France secured their place in the knockout stages, with one more game remaining against Slovenia.
France currently leads Group C with four points, while Great Britain and Germany have three points each, and Slovenia sits at the bottom with two points. In this tournament, teams earn two points for a win and one point for a loss, with head-to-head records determining tiebreakers.
The Women's EuroBasket tournament, taking place in Slovenia and Israel from June 15th to 25th, features 16 teams divided into four groups. Group winners advance directly to the quarter-finals, while second and third-place teams from each group proceed to the initial knockout stage.
The four semi-finalists and the winner of a play-off competition between the losing quarter-finalists will secure spots in the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Olympic qualifying tournaments. As hosts of the 2024 Olympics, France has already qualified for the event.
