In a historic moment at the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup 2023, France achieved their first-ever victory over the United States in a youth world event, defeating them 89-86 to advance to the final. Prior to this game, France had lost all six encounters against the USA in the U19 World Cup, including the 2021 Final, as well as two games in the FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup. The clash between these two elite teams showcased exceptional skills and athleticism.
Zacharie Perrin was the standout performer for France, contributing 18 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists, displaying an efficiency rating of 26. Melvin Ajinca also made a significant impact with 17 points, including three three-pointers.
On the American side, Tobe Awaka had an impressive game with 14 points, 11 rebounds, and 4 steals, while Mark Armstrong (17 points) and Tre Johnson (16 points) displayed their offensive prowess.
The game remained closely contested throughout, with neither team holding a significant lead. There were 12 lead changes, and the largest lead was only six points. With less than 6 minutes remaining, Mark Armstrong's layup gave the USA a 78-74 advantage.
However, after receiving a technical foul for his reaction towards the French bench, the game shifted in favor of France. They went on a decisive 14-3 run, taking an 86-81 lead with 2 minutes left.
While Zacharie Perrin shined as the leading scorer, Melvin Ajinca made crucial plays during the decisive run. He delivered a powerful dunk on a fast break and converted the ensuing three-point play. Ajinca later nailed a crucial three-pointer, extending France's lead to 86-81 and sealing their surge.
France shot an impressive 52 percent from the field, including 8-of-16 from beyond the arc. Their defense limited USA's offense to just 44 percent shooting.
Expressing their joy and satisfaction, power forward Zacharie Perrin stated, "We had a game plan before the game and we respected the game plan. We did an amazing job. I don't know how to explain this. I am so proud of our guys. We did a perfect job today."
Forward Zaccharie Risacher added, "This is great. This is what we are working for. We are enjoying this moment. It's very special for us. We have one more game to go. We are ready for the Final."
