The indoor sports hall of the Ondo State Sports Complex in Akure was filled to capacity as basketball enthusiasts witnessed impressive artistry on the first day of the Zenith Basketball League (Atlantic Conference).
The first match of the day saw Firstbank Basketball Club facing Delta Force. The Asaba-based team showed little strength in the first quarter, while Firstbank displayed dominance as they picked up points in the second quarter, widening the margin as Delta Force's technical bench looked on.
By the end of the fourth quarter, Firstbank Basketball Club defeated the Seasiders with a score of 51-23.
In the second match of the day, Mountain of Fire and Miracles Basketball Club convincingly defeated the re-grouped First Deep Waters Basketball Club 55-16.
Dolphins also secured a win in their first match of the day, winning by a 17-point margin with a score of 57-40.
The home team, Sunshine Angels, played against Bayelsa in the last match of the day. Despite the support from the home crowd, Coach Shola Aluko's side narrowly lost to the Yenagoa-based team with a score of 35-29.
After the match, Shola Aluko commended his team for their effort and assured that they would perform better in the next game. "It's not the result we wanted. We missed several chances we should have converted in the first two quarters, but that doesn't mean we are a bad team," he said.
Aluko expressed optimism for their next match against MFM. "We will try again tomorrow, and hopefully, we will make our fans proud."
Basketball enthusiast Dapo Pius praised the participating teams and officials for their professionalism but suggested improvements from the organizers. "The teams displayed excellent skills, and the officials were professional, but the organizers should improve the lighting in the hall, which I believe affected the players, especially Sunshine Angels in the last two quarters. Additionally, a more accessible medical team is needed to assist injured players."
The Elite League enters its second day, with the first match scheduled for 10 a.m.
