FIBA World Cup feature five African nations, showcasing African talent and advancing basketball

Posted : 21 August 2023
Six African countries are set to compete in the FIBA World Cup, highlighting the growth of African basketball since the 2019 World Cup. While Nigeria won't be participating, Côte d'Ivoire and Angola are returning from the 2019 tournament, joined by South Sudan, Egypt, and Cape Verde. The introduction of the NBA's Basketball Africa League (BAL) has helped showcase continental talent and elevate African basketball.

Angola, once a dominant force in African basketball, is transitioning its roster with a focus on younger players. They face challenges amidst this transitional phase, but their experience and talent remain noteworthy. South Sudan, the world's youngest country, is also making its mark with a strong roster, including players with high-level US experience.

Egypt has benefited from the NBA and BAL boom, with a competitive environment fostering growth. The Premier League has seen success with clubs like Zamalek and Al Ahly. Egypt's basketball scene is flourishing, and players like Omar Oraby highlight the increasing depth and talent.

Cape Verde has made history by becoming the smallest country to qualify for the FIBA World Cup. Their success at AfroBasket 2007 and the growth of club basketball have propelled the sport's popularity. With a strong showing in the World Cup, Cape Verde aims to build on this momentum.

Côte d'Ivoire is experiencing a resurgence in basketball after a period of decline. Improved results and better support have attracted young players to the sport. The Fédération Ivoirienne de Basket-Ball is working to enhance the national league and provide better visibility for games.

Overall, these African teams represent the continent's growing basketball prowess and their determination to excel on the global stage. The FIBA World Cup offers a platform to showcase their talent, dedication, and progress in the sport.
