FIBA Women's AfroBasket: Nigeria and Mali hope to secure spot in FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup
Posted : 28 July 2023
Nigeria achieved a remarkable feat by winning the FIBA Women's AfroBasket championship for the third consecutive time, defeating Mali 70-59 in the final. Both teams secured their spots in the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2022 by reaching the AfroBasket final.
They will compete in the Women's World Cup 2022 Qualifying Tournaments in February, where they'll face tough competition, including hosts Australia and Olympic champions USA, who already have guaranteed places in the World Cup.
In these qualifying tournaments, the top three teams from each group will earn direct berths to the World Cup, leaving just two spots for the best-performing teams from other groups. Nigeria has demonstrated their ability to thrive in qualifying tournaments before, having secured a spot in this year's Tokyo Olympics through the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Belgrade.
Nigeria's strong performance in the 2018 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup, where they became the first African team to reach the Quarter-Finals, gives them confidence going into the upcoming World Cup Qualifying Tournaments. They are expected to rely on many of the same players who have represented the country in recent major tournaments.
On the other hand, Mali's world ranking before the AfroBasket was 41st, making them underdogs for securing a spot in the 12-team Women's World Cup. Despite their promising performance in the AfroBasket final and having a young and talented team, they will face stiff competition to qualify for the global event, which is scheduled to begin on September 22 in Sydney.
Both Nigeria and Mali should be proud of their achievements in the AfroBasket, but they now face another challenging road in the World Cup Qualifying Tournaments, with only the top-performing teams earning their places in the prestigious FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2022.
