FIBA 3x3 Women's Series: Canada's momentum was shattered by Czech Republic's strong team, but Katherine Plouffe's sister showcased her skills against Italy

Posted : 07 August 2023
Despite missing sharpshooter Paige Crozon, Canada entered the event with strong momentum following their victory in Edmonton. The team had key players like Jamie Scott and Kacie Bosch to provide the spark, while the Plouffe sisters aimed to dominate.

The first day exemplified this strategy. Facing a powerful Czech Republic team in front of their home crowd, Canada fought collectively, with each player contributing. However, they fell short against Katherine Plouffe's exceptional performance, scoring 10 points and grabbing 7 rebounds. In the next game, Katherine's sister showcased her skills against Italy, capitalizing on the absence of Raelin D’Alie's energy.

Against a clinical Lithuania side known to trouble opponents, the Plouffe sisters once again demonstrated their resilience. Despite the efforts of Kamile Nacickaite and Monika Grigalauskyte, it was the Plouffes who remained unshakable. The toughest challenge came from Spain, where both teams displayed strong defensive prowess. Katherine Plouffe's 8-point contribution, combined with Michelle's orchestration of the team's offense, secured a narrow but crucial victory, propelling Canada into the finals.

Facing a youthful French side lacking the core that won silver in the FIBA 3x3 World Cup 2023, Canada witnessed a shaky start for France. A surprising loss to Israel due to Dor Saar's clutch performance revealed France's initial lack of cohesion. They managed a comeback win against Gyor, unveiling their defensive strategy and rim pressure tactics, led by Anna Ngo Ndjock and Coline Franchelin.

A dominant rebounding display against Chile secured France a spot in the semi-finals, marking a pivotal moment in the tournament. After a loss to Canada, the Czech Republic found their rhythm, aiming for victory. Despite a 6-point lead for the Czech team, Anna Ngo Ndjock's remarkable performance in the final minute led France to a stunning comeback victory, booking their place in the finals.

The finals pitted two contrasting styles against each other: speed versus power. Canada, embodied by Michelle and Katherine Plouffe's physicality, clashed with the rapid speed of Ndjock and Franchelin. Although France initially held an advantage, Canada's strength prevailed. Michelle Plouffe's dominant play extended their lead to 19-17, ultimately securing their third Series win and a strong bid for the Women's Series crown.

The World Number 1, Michelle Plouffe, proved her prowess yet again with a remarkable 46-point performance. Notably, 15 of these points came in the crucial finals game against France, where her pivotal contributions secured victory. Her consistent offensive and defensive excellence solidifies her position as the world's best player.
