He revealed that paying salaries as at when due and providing a befitting accommodation for the team are big factors.
“Dr Olukoya and his wife Dr Shade have hearts of gold. Their support for MFM Women Basketball club has been immense, and they’re always there to motivate them.
``Apart from regular payment of salaries, I’m sure you’ve seen videos of the GO’s wife dancing and singing with the girls in her office? And you can trust that each time they see her and her husband, the ladies and their officials go back home with lots of goodies”, stated the veteran sports journalist.
On the excellent on court performance of the girls in the ongoing Nigeria Basketball Federation Women League, Enakhena said his decision to employ a new head coach, Ochuko Owolabi had paid off as she has made the difference with the Shade Olukoya Queens.
“My new head coach Ochuko Owolabi has brought discipline and competitiveness to MFM Women Basketball Club”.
Enakhena who explained that he was not surprised with her exploits so far because of her discipline and business like approach to the game.
The former chairman of MFM Football club told the story of how his search for a coach after parting ways with his former coach began and how he had to settle for a woman coach.
“When i let go of my former coach, I told myself that I needed someone who will give the girls a new vista to transform and reignite the flame in the club.
``I turned to one of Africa’s most respected basketball Adminstrator, Col Sam Ahmedu (RTD) who recommended someone who unfortunately was on his way out of the country to Germany.
``He was highly recommended but with him out of the country, I decided that it was time I went for a woman who has played and coached the game in Nigeria. The options were very few.
``I recalled that one name on this list was coach Ochuko Owolabi, a former player and coach of Dolphins Women Basketball Club of Lagos,'' he said.
The club President revealed that hiring Ochuko did not come easy but with the intervention of her husband she accepted the job of the head coach of MFM Women Basketball Club, and the rest like they say is history.
“The first training session with her handling affairs was magical and the ladies confirmed it. It was as if I was in a dream land witnessing a different kind of training session.
``She ensured that training sessions were exciting and businesslike. You can’t feign injuries or dodge any of the sessions. That was how seriously she changed things.
``There was this buzz around camp and the girls started seeing her as a mother figure," he said.
Enakhena who has the pedigree of starting clubs from zero level to the elite league and also tasting continental actions both in football and basketball said that the turn around for the team was Ochuko reviving the competitive spirit in the team, eradicating complacency, and making them understand the need to commit the team to God before and after games.
“Before games, she ensures that the girls commit everything to God through praises and supplication.
``You’ve to prove that yours good to earn a starting shirt, and those that sweated it out during matches earn higher match bonuses.
``So against all odds, we are in the final 4 playoffs of the women’s league which starts this weekend in Lagos.
``The target is to win the league and represent Nigeria again on the continent like we did in 2019 when we came second.
``Thanks to this woman for bringing the best out of the girls. We want to win this trophy as a sign of appreciation to the GO and his wife”, a happy Enakhena concluded.
Coach Ochuko Owolabi was a former player, assistant coach and Head Coach with Dolphins Basketball Club. She is happily married with children and striving to raise the bar in the Basketball community.
