Draymond Green suspended five games for altercation with Rudy Gobert

The NBA has handed down a five-game suspension without pay to Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green for "escalating an on-court altercation" during the in-season tournament game against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Green was ejected alongside Klay Thompson and Jaden McDaniels after a fight that involved "forcibly grabbing" Rudy Gobert around the neck in what was deemed an "unsportsmanlike and dangerous manner." NBA executive vice president Joe Dumars cited Green's history of unsportsmanlike conduct as a factor in the length of the suspension.
Green's suspension includes two games against the Oklahoma City Thunder and matchups with the Houston Rockets, Phoenix Suns, and San Antonio Spurs as part of the in-season tournament. He will forfeit $769,970 due to the suspension, marking his fifth career suspension. Notably, Green was suspended for Game 5 of the 2016 NBA Finals and, most recently, for Game 3 of the first round of the playoffs last season for stomping on the chest of Kings center Domantas Sabonis.
The altercation occurred only 100 seconds into the game when McDaniels and Thompson got entangled in transition, leading to a physical confrontation. As other players joined the fray, Green put Gobert in a headlock, resulting in ejections and technical fouls. Green's history of confrontations with Gobert, including teasing him in 2019 and exchanging verbal jabs, adds a layer of animosity to the situation.
Gobert expressed dissatisfaction with his fine, considering his role as a peacemaker during the incident. He labeled the situation a "personal attack" and intends to appeal the fine. Green's contentious history with Gobert dates back to 2019, with exchanges involving teasing, verbal sparring, and accusations of being "on the softer side." This incident marks Green's second ejection of the season, following his removal against the Cleveland Cavaliers for receiving two technical fouls.
