The Denver Nuggets have dismissed head coach Michael Malone just three games before the end of the regular season, despite being in position for a playoff berth. The organization also confirmed that general manager Calvin Booth will not return, as his contract is not being renewed.
These moves mark a significant shift for the franchise, which has been one of the Western Conference’s more consistent performers in recent years.
Nuggets CEO Josh Kroenke explained the decision as a necessary step to improve the team's chances of competing for the 2025 NBA Championship.
While acknowledging Malone's contributions—particularly in helping establish the team's championship-winning culture—Kroenke emphasized that the timing, though difficult, was aimed at ensuring the franchise can perform at its peak moving forward.
Malone, who led the Nuggets to the 2023 NBA title and a Western Conference semi-final appearance last season, has been a central figure in Denver’s recent success.
During his decade with the Nuggets, Malone guided the team to eight straight winning seasons and a current record of 47-32, placing them fourth in the West.
However, a recent run of four straight defeats has threatened their hopes of securing home-court advantage in the opening round of the playoffs. Assistant coach David Adelman has been named interim head coach for the remainder of the season.
