Dejounte Murray, a guard for the Atlanta Hawks, was given a one-game suspension by the NBA on Monday afternoon for making physical contact with and verbally insulting a referee at the conclusion of Game 4 of Atlanta's first-round series against the Boston Celtics on Sunday night.
Tuesday night's Game 5 — perhaps the final game of Atlanta's season — is when Murray will serve the ban. In the best-of-seven series, the Hawks are down 3-1 to the Celtics; if the Celtics win, they will go on to play the Philadelphia 76ers in the Eastern Conference playoffs.
"Beating Boston in the Garden in the situation we're in right now, we all know is a challenge in and of itself," Hawks coach Quin Snyder said just after learning about Murray's suspension. "[But] it's something the entire group has to absorb."
Murray made eye contact with referee Gediminas Petraitis as he was leaving the floor at the conclusion of Sunday's 129-121 Celtics victory. Murray finished the game with 23 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 assists in 40 minutes. Before leaving the court, he turned around and pointed and shouted at someone.
