Los Angeles Lakers guard D'Angelo Russell has decided to opt into the final year of his contract, securing $18.7 million for the upcoming season, as he revealed to reporters a day before the deadline. Russell, who is 28, concluded a strong season for the Lakers with a notable performance surge in the second half, finishing his ninth season with averages of 18.0 points on 45.6% shooting, including 41.5% from three-point range, along with 6.3 assists and 3.1 rebounds.
Amid trade discussions last season, Russell affirmed his commitment to the Lakers and expressed his enthusiasm for playing under the new head coach, JJ Redick. "I love what JJ is about and I really see myself thriving under his guidance to help win at a high level," Russell stated on Friday night. His decision to stay underscores his confidence in Redick's leadership and vision for the team.
Center Jaxson Hayes is also expected to opt into the final year of his contract, as confirmed by a source familiar with his intentions. Hayes, 24, joined the Lakers last summer after spending four seasons with the New Orleans Pelicans. The 2019 No. 8 overall pick signed a two-year deal with a player option for the second year and averaged 4.3 points and 3.0 rebounds in 70 games last season.
The Lakers had explored trading Russell last season to upgrade the point guard position, partly due to his struggles in the 2023 Western Conference finals against the Denver Nuggets. With the recent draft additions of Dalton Knecht and Bronny James, along with the potential to trade two future first-round picks, the Lakers could see a revamped lineup. Redick, who has emphasized the importance of three-point shooting, might find Russell's skill set particularly valuable, especially after he broke the Lakers' single-season record for three-pointers made with 226 last season.
