Bulls' Lonzo Ball Undergoes His Third Surgery for The Greatest Chance of a Recovery

Lonzo Ball, a guard for the Chicago Bulls, had a cartilage transplant on his left knee earlier on Monday. According to coach Billy Donovan, this procedure gives Ball the best chance to eventually resume his NBA career.

"I know he's going to work really hard [on his rehab]," Prior to Monday night's matchup with the Philadelphia 76ers, Donovan noted. “[The doctors] felt like the surgery went well.”

That was a similar sentiment to what Ball himself stated in a Bulls press statement last week revealing he would be undergoing his third left knee surgery in a little over a year.

"My main focus has been on returning to the court and getting to a place where I can rejoin my teammates," Ball said. "This has been a frustrating process, but I'm confident these next steps are the best path forward. The support of my family, friends, fans and medical staff throughout my recovery is what keeps me moving forward. I can't wait to get back to what I love doing most -- playing basketball."

Ball last participated in a game on January 14, 2022. He underwent surgery to repair a damaged meniscus in his left knee a short while afterwards, and Chicago predicted he would return in 6 to 8 weeks. Ball underwent a second surgery in September after missing the remainder of the season and experiencing knee stiffness and agony all summer.

Ball was, however, declared out for the remainder of the game last month after failing to make sufficient progress to allow a comeback for this season.

With his mix of size and length at the point, as well as being one of the league's greatest passers, a good defender, and an improved 3-point shooter, Ball, 25, blended in perfectly with star wings Zach LaVine and DeMar DeRozan in Chicago during the first part of last season.
