Breanna Stewart, the power forward for the New York Liberty, has set a new WNBA record for the most points scored in a single season. She achieved this feat by scoring 40 points in a game against the Dallas Wings, bringing her total points for the season to 885 in 38 games. The previous record was held by Diana Taurasi, who scored 860 points in the 2006 season, which consisted of 34 games.
Stewart expressed her appreciation for the honor of being mentioned alongside Taurasi, saying, "It means a lot. Any time I'm in the same limelight as [Taurasi] it's a huge honor. I really appreciate everything I've been able to do, and wouldn't be able to do it without my teammates."
With two regular-season games remaining against the Los Angeles Sparks and the Washington Mystics, Stewart has the opportunity to further extend her record. The New York Liberty, currently on a seven-game winning streak, are positioned second in the Western Conference and are in contention with the Las Vegas Aces for the top seed in the playoffs.
