76ers Defeat Mavs as James Harden and Joel Embiid Return
Posted : 12 April 2023
James Harden, a great player for the Philadelphia 76ers, said he's been battling with the problem for "several months" after making his way back into the lineup following a four-game layoff due to left Achilles tightness.
Harden was alluding to the game against the Chicago Bulls on March 21 at the Wells Fargo Center, which Philadelphia lost in overtime and in which Harden shot 2-for-14 over the course of 47 minutes.
He was observed limping in the locker room after the game and missed the following four games: a victory in Chicago, losses in Golden State, Phoenix, and Denver on Monday.
"I don't know where it came from. It's been bothering me for some months, I would say," Harden said after finishing with 15 points and 12 assists in 38 minutes in Wednesday night's 116-108 win over the Dallas Mavericks. "I just wanted to continue to play on it, and there was one point to where the last game I played, [it was] just really unbearable so I couldn't even go out there.
"Six games left to finish the season off, finish off strong, then we get another week to prepare. I felt like tonight was the game to come back."
Harden displayed outstanding play during the shootaround on Monday, including throwing an alley-oop to himself off the backboard and confidently slamming it in.
However, Philadelphia opted to be cautious and held Harden out for one more game before bringing him back against Dallas on Wednesday night.
Harden said that going ahead, he'll need to keep an eye on and care for his Achilles.
Meanwhile, the return of both Harden and Joel Embiid (right calf) to the court has allowed the 76ers to snap a three-game losing streak.
Embiid initially tweaked his calf last Wednesday in Chicago, when he didn't play in the second half of a rout. He missed Monday's MVP matchup with Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic. Prior to being declared injured soon after Monday's shootaround, he came back to play against Golden State on Friday and Phoenix on Saturday.
