The 2024 Zenith Bank Women’s Basketball National Final 8 began in Lagos on Thursday, with Customs Basketball Club of Abuja defeating Dolphins Basketball Club of Lagos 74-62.
Dolphins took an early lead in the first quarter, leading 21-20 points after some impressive displays from the team.
However, they had to work harder in the second quarter as Customs came out firing on all cylinders, dominating ball play and taking the second quarter 20-17 for a 40-38 lead.
Customs forward Nkem Akaraiwe's brilliance gave their opponents significant problems, as she was unstoppable in the paint.
Her aggressive play and intelligence were too much for Dolphins to handle, and she helped her team secure a 10-point lead by the end of the third quarter.
Customs held on to their lead to secure the win, despite Dolphins’ energetic displays and good teamwork.
The Head Coach of Customs, Abdulraman Mohammed, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that he was happy with the result, especially after defeating a strong team.
He stated that he would take their matches one at a time, as it was too early to think about winning the competition.
However, he expressed confidence in reaching the finals.
Similarly, Akindele Peters, Head Coach of Dolphins Basketball Club, said his team lost concentration at critical moments in the game.
He added that the team would surely bounce back in their second game.
