2023 FIBA AfroCan: D'Tigers lose classification game to Kenya

Posted : 15 July 2023
Nigeria’s D’Tigers once again suffered another 61-59 loss to their Kenyan counterparts on Friday, in a five to eight classification game at the Pavilhao Multiusos de Luanda, in Angola.

Africa Sport Network (ASN) reports that Nigeria’s D'Tigers had earlier on Thursday suffered the second defeat at the ongoing 2023 FIBA AfroCan in Angola as the team was handed a slim 72-74 loss by the defending champions, Congo Democratic Republic in the quarter-finals match.

The loss to the Central African country means D'Tigers will have to fight for a place in the five to eight classification game after losing the ground of a podium finish as they failed to qualify for the semifinals.

The first loss suffered by DTigers was their sloppy match against Angola in the second match on Monday which almost cost the Nigerian side the quarter-final ticket berth, but they rallied to beat Gabon on Wednesday.

However, the quater finals match did not go their way as they lost to the defending champions, Congo Democratic Republic before the much-loved win 71-55 over Gabon.

In the five to eight classification game, Kenya raced in the first quarter 20-13 to establish a seven-point lead over Nigeria.

D’Tigers bounced back in the second quarter reducing the deficit to just two points with 18-13 scores, going into the halftime break.

Coach Ogoh Odaudu’s side took the third quarter 13-11 to tie the scores with Kenya going to the closing stages.

Kenya however, was able to pull through with a 17-15 margin in the fourth quarter to take a two-point victory.

The AfroCan is a continental basketball competition meant for players who play for basketball clubs on the continent.

It is also an avenue for new players to shine against their peers.

The competition perhaps has given D’Tigers valuable experience as they prepare for the upcoming FIBA Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament.

The Group Phase is expected to hold in Lagos, Nigeria, as D’Tigers will have the opportunity to play in front of their home fans for the first time in a while.

The D’Tigers are in Group A and will face Mali, Uganda, and Senegal as they hope to qualify for the 2024 Olympics after missing out on a spot at the 2023 FIBA World Cup.
