Yomif Kejelcha Sets New Men's Half Marathon World Record

Posted : 29 October 2024

Yomif Kejelcha made history in Valencia on Sunday by breaking the men's world half marathon record, finishing the race in an impressive time of 57 minutes and 30 seconds, just one second faster than the previous record. This remarkable achievement came during his sixth attempt at the half marathon distance, showcasing his exceptional talent and determination.

Kejelcha asserted his dominance early in the race, taking the lead after the three-kilometer mark. He reached significant checkpoints, passing 5 kilometers in 13:38, 10 kilometers in 27:12, and 15 kilometers in 40:56. His strategic breakaway from Kenyan runners Daniel Mateiko and Isaia Kipkoech Lasoi allowed him to secure the victory and surpass the previous record held by Uganda's Jacob Kiplimo, set in Lisbon three years ago.

In the women's competition, Kenya's Agnes Ngetich also began with impressive speed, initially maintaining a pace that suggested she could challenge the world record. However, her pace slowed in the latter stages of the race, and she finished with a time of 1:03:03, marking the second-fastest half marathon performance in history.
