Yaroslava Mahuchikh Breaks 37-Year-Old Women's High Jump World Record in Paris

Posted : 07 July 2024

The world record in the women's high jump, held for 37 years, has been broken by Ukrainian athlete Yaroslava Mahuchikh. Competing in the Diamond League in Paris, Mahuchikh cleared 2.10 meters, surpassing the previous record of 2.09 meters set by Stefka Kostadinova of Bulgaria in 1987. Mahuchikh, the reigning world champion and Tokyo Olympic bronze medalist, achieved this feat just ahead of the Olympic Games in Paris, marking a significant milestone in her career and in the history of women's high jump.

In an intense competition, Mahuchikh went head-to-head with Australia's indoor world champion, Nicola Olislagers. While Olislagers failed to clear 2.03 meters, Mahuchikh succeeded on her second attempt, securing her victory. She then progressed to clear 2.07 meters, setting a new Ukrainian record, and finally surpassed the 2.10-meter mark on her first attempt, etching her name in the record books.

Mahuchikh’s achievement adds to her impressive list of accolades, including a gold medal at the World Championships, bronze at the Tokyo Olympics, and multiple titles as a world and European champion. Despite the challenges posed by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which forced her to train in Germany and Belgium, Mahuchikh has continued to excel, representing her country with pride and resilience.

In another remarkable performance, Faith Kipyegon of Kenya set a new world record in the women's 1500 meters. Kipyegon clocked 3:49.04 minutes, breaking her previous record set in June 2023. The two-time Olympic champion and three-time world champion finished ahead of Australia's Jessica Hull and Britain's Laura Muir, further cementing her status as one of the greatest middle-distance runners in history.
