World Para Athletics Championships: Dan Pembroke, Paralympic javelin thrower, overcomes injury
Posted : 14 July 2023
Dan Pembroke, a British Paralympic javelin thrower, has already experienced numerous chapters in his life but hopes for more to come. In 2012, his Olympic dreams were shattered by injury, and he temporarily left the sport due to a degenerative eye condition.
During this break, Pembroke traveled the world extensively. However, he eventually returned to athletics as a Para-athlete and won a gold medal at the rescheduled Tokyo Paralympic Games.
Now, Pembroke has his sights set on the F13 javelin world title at the upcoming Para Athletics World Championships in Paris, which coincides with his 32nd birthday.
Reflecting on his journey, Pembroke acknowledges the unusual experience of returning to competitive sports after living a completely different life away from athletics. Although his eyesight is deteriorating, he strives to find the positives in challenging circumstances.
Pembroke's London 2012 aspirations were thwarted by a snapped medial collateral ligament in his elbow, adding to the ongoing effects of his genetic eye condition, retinitis pigmentosa.
Faced with the decision of continuing with athletics and undergoing extensive rehabilitation or prioritizing his usable vision, Pembroke chose to pursue his passion for travel.
This impulsive choice led him to meet his fiancée, Martina, during their adventures in various countries, including Sardinia, South East Asia, New Zealand, Australia, and Tasmania.
However, as Pembroke's eyesight further declined and safety concerns arose, he decided to return to the UK in 2019. He enrolled in a sports massage therapy course at the Royal National College for the Blind in Hereford and participated in a gene therapy trial at Moorfields Eye Hospital, which stabilized the sight loss in his right eye.
Encouraged by these developments, Pembroke began exploring a comeback to competitive sports.
With his journey marked by resilience, adaptability, and the pursuit of new opportunities, Pembroke is eager to make his mark at the Para Athletics World Championships, continuing his remarkable story of triumph over adversity.
