World Diamond League: McMaster defeats Warholm in 400 hurdles

Posted : 01 September 2023
In a surprising turn of events at the prestigious Diamond League competition in Zurich, world record holder and Olympic 400m hurdles champion Carsten Warholm of Norway faced an uncommon defeat. He secured the second position, with Kieron McMaster from the Virgin Islands emerging victorious. McMaster completed the race in an impressive 47.27 seconds, narrowly edging out Warholm by a mere three hundredths of a second.

Carrie Richardson, widely regarded as the fastest woman in the world, continued to showcase her dominance in the 100m event. She triumphed despite challenging indoor wind conditions, clocking in at 10.88 seconds. Eileen Thompson-Hera, a former Olympic champion from Jamaica, trailed behind with a time of 11.00 seconds. Ethiopian Yomit Kajilika, who had a disappointing performance in Budapest where he finished fifth, made a strong comeback in the 500m race, securing a commanding victory in a remarkable time of 12:46.19.

Qatar's Motaj Barshim, who faced disappointment with a third-place finish at the World Championships, demonstrated his prowess in the high jump by effortlessly clearing 2.35m. This height was an impressive 7cm higher than the runner-up, Jean-Marco Tamberi of Italy, who managed 2.28m. In the 200m race, Jamaican Shericka Jackson, known for her remarkable performance in Budapest, claimed victory with a time of 21.82 seconds, although it was not as record-breaking as her previous achievement.

Noah Lyles, who had a remarkable showing at the World Championships with three gold medals, competed in the 200m event and secured a time of 19.80 seconds. However, he fell short of challenging Usain Bolt's world record of 19.19 seconds. Young American Arion Knighton took the second position with a time of 19.87 seconds. Lastly, in the pole vault, Sweden's Mundo Duplantis attempted a 6.00m jump but, much like his performance in Budapest, fell short of setting a new world record.
