World Championships in Athletics: Olympic champion Stephen Gardiner withdraws from final due to muscle injury

Posted : 24 August 2023
Dramatic events unfolded at the Athletics World Championships in Budapest. Stephen Gardiner, the Olympic champion in the 400-meter dash, faced disappointment as he pulled a muscle during the semifinals, leading to his withdrawal from the final. Despite initially being in the lead, Gardiner's injury prevented him from continuing. The final will now feature Wade van Niekerk, Matteo Hodson-Smith (who set a new European record of 44.25 seconds), and Antonio Watson.

In the 1,500 meters, Faith Kipyegon, the world record holder, secured the gold medal with a time of 3:54.87. Dariba Voltji took the second spot with a time of 3:55.69, and Sifan Hassan claimed the bronze with a time of 3:56.00. Kipyegon, who has a successful history in major events, holds Olympic titles from both 2016 and 2020 and previously won the World Championships in 2017 and 2022.

Gianmarco Tamberi clinched the gold medal in the high jump by clearing 2.36 meters. He narrowly defeated Jovon Harrison, who also cleared the same height but was disqualified due to more failed attempts than the Italian. The Olympic champion Muataz Issa Barshim, who shared gold with Tamberi in Tokyo, secured the third position by clearing 2.33 meters. This victory marked Tamberi's first win against the Qatari champion.

In a surprising turn of events in the women's discus throw final, Valerie Ullmann, the Olympic champion and favored athlete, secured the second place. The gold medal was claimed by another American, Olauga Tausaga, who improved her personal best by a significant 4.03 meters, reaching 69.49 meters, compared to Ullmann's 69.23 meters. Notably, this victory marks the first time a U.S. athlete has won the gold medal in discus throw at the World Championships.

Kendra Harrison made her mark by setting a world record in the women's 100-meter hurdles, clocking an impressive time of 12.24 seconds during the qualifying round. This achievement secured her first place and advancement to the semifinals. Devin Charlton also progressed to the next round with a time of 12.44 seconds, securing the second spot.
