Posted : 23 August 2023
Keely Hodgkinson, aiming for a world gold, secured victory in her 800m heat with a time of 1:59.53 in Budapest. Zharnel Hughes, who recently won a 100m bronze, won his 200m heat in 19.99 seconds. Dina Asher-Smith, Daryll Neita, and Bianca Williams also progressed in the women's 200m heats.
Hodgkinson comfortably secured her spot in the semi-finals by pulling ahead in the closing moments, joined by Jemma Reekie (1:59.71) who came in second. Unfortunately, Isabelle Boffey (2:01.40) did not qualify. Hodgkinson's expected rivals for gold, Athing Mu of the USA (1:59.59) and Kenyan Mary Moraa (1:59.89), also advanced.
Hughes, fresh from his world 100m podium finish, confidently won his 200m heat, clocking the fastest qualifying time. He expressed inspiration from his earlier success and a hunger for more medals.
Asher-Smith, after a disappointing 100m performance, won her 200m heat in 22.46 seconds. Neita (22.39) and Williams (22.67), who both faced challenges in the 100m, secured automatic qualification with their respective second and third places.
Pole vault world record holder Armand Duplantis of Sweden made clearances up to 5.75m to qualify for the final. Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Karsten Warholm are eyeing gold in the men's 1500m and 400m hurdles.
Due to extreme heat in Budapest, the women's 5,000m heats were moved to the afternoon session, where temperatures are exceeding 30C.
