World Championships 2023: Katarina Johnson-Thompson wins gold in heptathlon, surpassing Anna Hall in long jump and javelin

Posted : 20 August 2023
Katarina Johnson-Thompson of Britain is set to kick off the final event of the heptathlon in the World Championships in Budapest from a gold medal position. The 2019 champion managed to surpass the favored Anna Hall in the long jump, and her exceptional performance in the javelin, achieving a personal best of 46.14m, extended her overall lead by 26 points. The second spot is held by Olympic and world silver medalist Anouk Vetter, while American contender Anna Hall trails 43 points behind in third place.

Johnson-Thompson is now poised to compete for gold in an eagerly anticipated 800m showdown. Despite her commendable 800m best time of two minutes 7.26 seconds, secured during her triumph in Doha, the 30-year-old is 4.29 seconds slower than Hall's impressive 2:02.97. However, Johnson-Thompson holds a lead of approximately two and a half seconds over Hall.

In the 100m heats, British athletes Dina Asher-Smith and Daryll Neita secured their places in the next round. Asher-Smith, a six-time world medallist and the 2019 200m champion, clocked 11.04 seconds, following American Brittany Brown (11.01) in a comfortable qualification. Neita crossed the line in 11.03 seconds, trailing medal contender Julian Alfred (10.99), but the disqualification of Imani-Lara Lansiquot, who ran under protest after a false start, was later confirmed.

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Shericka Jackson, Sha'Carri Richardson, and Marie-Josee Ta Lou progressed by winning their heats in the women's 100m, highlighting the competitive nature of the event. Matthew Hudson-Smith secured a season-best time of 44.69 seconds, finishing second to 400m world record holder Wayde van Niekerk. South Africa's two-time champion qualified as the second-fastest overall (44.57) for the semi-finals.

In the women's 400m event, both Victoria Ohuruogu and Ama Pipi advanced with second-place finishes in their respective heats, recording times of 50.60 and 50.81. Tade Ojora emerged victorious in his men's 110m hurdles heat with a time of 13.32 seconds, securing the fifth-fastest qualification for the semi-finals.
