Nigeria's silver medalist at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast Shot putter Chukwuebuka Enekwechi has been ranked by the World Athletics as the highest athlete in Africa.
Shot Putter Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, also a gold medalist at the 2019 All African Games in Rabat, Morocco, remains the top-ranked Nigerian athlete in the overall men’s ranking with sprinters.
Enekwechi is ranked 194th, while sprinters Udodi Onwuzurike (316) and Ushoritse Itshekiri (514) are second and third, respectively. It was, however, a missed opportunity for the dethroned 100-meter hurdler, Tobi Amusan, who dropped by one place in the recent rankings.
Recall that Amusan lost her world women’s 100m hurdles crown to Jamaica’s Danielle Williams at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, in August. She is now ranked 25th globally but retains her No. 2 spot in the 100m hurdles behind Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn. Also, compatriot Ese Brume lost eight spots in the latest ranking.
The 27-year-old was ranked 142nd last week after jumping 6.84 metres to place fourth at the World Championship. The African long jump record holder is now placed 150th in the overall women’s ranking.
She, however, retains her status as the fifth-best-ranked athlete in the women’s long jump event behind reigning World Indoor and Outdoor champion Ivana Vuleta of Serbia, USA duo Tara Davis-Woodhall and Quanesha Burks, as well as Italian Larissa Iapichino.
The Nigerian duo of Amusan and Brume will improve on their ranking if they win their respective events at the Diamond League final in Oregon, USA, next week.
