Posted : 19 August 2023
Katarina Johnson-Thompson, the 2019 heptathlon champion, began her campaign at the 2023 World Athletics Championships by securing fourth place after the initial two events. She finished sixth in her 100m hurdles heat with a time of 13.50 seconds. She then impressed in the high jump, clearing 1.86m – the joint best effort in the competition. This performance earned her a total of 2,104 points, positioning her 41 points behind leader Anna Hall.
Johnson-Thompson's journey back to form has been marked by setbacks, including injuries like a career-threatening Achilles rupture and a calf injury during the 200m at the Tokyo Olympics. However, she exhibited resilience and optimism, showing solid progress in her events.
Laura Muir, part of Team Britain, progressed in the 1500m alongside two other Britons. However, Jazmin Sawyers, hampered by prior injuries, unfortunately exited the long jump early after a 6.41m effort. She expressed that her lack of training due to injury was the main challenge.
American Taliyah Brooks emerged as a strong contender in the heptathlon with the best time of 12.78 seconds in the hurdles, placing her second overall. Johnson-Thompson's performance in the high jump, one of her strengths, was a mix of consistency and excellence, allowing her to position herself well for the competition's continuation.
The event proceeded with the shot put and 200m on the agenda. The heptathlon experts acknowledged Johnson-Thompson's solid high jump display and noted her potential to contend for a medal. The competition still included a strong field, with Johnson-Thompson striving to maintain her promising position.
In other British performances, Laura Muir comfortably secured her spot in the 1500m semi-finals. Additionally, the British 4x400m mixed relay team qualified as the second-fastest for the final, showcasing a time of three minutes 11.19 seconds.
The upcoming evening session was anticipated to feature the women's 10,000m final, led by the ambitious Sifan Hassan's pursuit of a remarkable 1500m, 5,000m, and 10,000m treble. The men's 100m heats were also scheduled, with athletes like Zharnel Hughes facing fierce competition from top contenders like defending champion Fred Kerley and Olympic champion Marcel Jacobs.
