World Athletics Championships 2023: Jamaican Andrew Hudson injured in eye after buggie collision
Posted : 25 August 2023
During the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, a collision between two buggies transporting athletes resulted in Jamaica's Andrew Hudson sustaining glass fragments in his eye. The incident occurred on Thursday when the buggies, used to transport athletes from the training center to the stadium, crashed. One of the buggies was carrying Hudson, a 200m runner, and his fellow competitors, including American world champion Noah Lyles. This collision led to a 30-minute delay in their heat.
Hudson, who finished fifth in the race, recounted the incident, saying, "A bunch of glass went into my right eye. My eyesight is pretty blurry every time I open my eye." Following the crash, Hudson was seen covering his right eye and sought medical attention. The doctor found shards of glass in his eye and attempted to remove them as best as possible. Despite the injury, Hudson decided to continue competing to avoid losing his spot, as he had worked hard to reach the World Championships.
The local organizing committee of the event is investigating the collision, and even a volunteer received treatment due to the incident. Despite the challenges, Hudson's determination and effort paid off. He later advanced to the final due to the referee's decision. Reflecting on the memorable experience, Hudson humorously remarked, "It is my first World Championships, so it's going to be memorable... maybe I'd better walk next time." Despite the unexpected adversity, Hudson's perseverance allowed him to continue his journey in the championships.
