World Athletics Champions update: Team Nigeria missed out podium in 100m finals

Posted : 21 August 2023
America's Noah Lyles has emerged as the new fastest man in the world at the ongoing World Athletics Championships in Budapest after a stunning display.

Lyles' emergence came in the men's 100 meters sprint final, on Day-2 in Budapest.

The American track and field star who is also the bronze winner in the Medale Blue Riband event, at the delayed 2020 Japan Olympics, won the 100 meters final in a time of 9.83 Seconds; five hundredths of a second, faster than 20-year-old Letsile Tebogo of Botswana, who becomes the first African man to win a World 100 meters medal.

Britain's Zharnel Hughes took bronze, one thousandth of a second behind Tebogo.

The 26 year old Lyles who will also compete in the 200 meters, for a possible three-peat of titles, is now a three-time World champion, having won the 200 metres at the 2019 and the 2022 World Championships, and now, the 100 meters event at the 2023 World Championships, in Budapest.

The victory will surely rearrange the pack and rankings of the sprinters going into next year's Paris Olympics, in France; but above that, it puts the newly crowned world champion in a strong position to aspire and become the first man to complete the men's 100 and 200 meters doubles; since Jamaica's Usain Bolt made it his personal routine at the Olympics and World Championships, from 2008-2016.

Neither American Fred Kerley (the reigning world champion) nor Italian Marcell Jacobs (Olympic Gold medalist) made it out of the semifinals, earlier on Sunday.

The story was the same for Team Nigeria's Usheoritse Itsekiri, who was a disappointing eighth in the first of three semifinals, with a time of 10:19 Seconds; :07 Seconds slower than his compatriot Seye Ogunlewe, who was fifth in the second semi-final with a time of 10:12 Seconds.
