On Wednesday, women triathletes began their race in the River Seine, marking a significant relief for organizers after recent water quality issues. The start of the competition came after organizers had to cancel training sessions and postpone the men's race earlier in the week due to contamination in the river caused by heavy rainstorms.
The latest water tests, received early Wednesday morning, confirmed that the Seine was now clean enough for the events to proceed. World Triathlon and the Paris Games' organizing committee announced that both the women's race and the rescheduled men's race would go ahead as planned.
Despite overnight rain in Paris, the weather cleared by the time athletes began their swim at the historic Alexandre III bridge. The women's race started with a 1,500-meter swim, consisting of two laps in the river, navigating both with and against the current.
Bermuda's Flora Duffy, the gold medalist from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, took the lead after the first lap, showcasing her strong performance as the competition continued.
