The Chairman of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), Sola Aiyepeku, restated on Tuesday the commitment of the state government towards hosting the Lagos Classics.
Aiyepeku made the pledge at the opening ceremony of the Lagos International Squash Classics held at Molade-Okoya Thomas Hall Teslim Balogun Stadium.
He noted that the state government had to increase the budget provisions for the Lagos International Squash Classics to ensure their success.
ASN reports that the Lagos International Squash Classics serve off at the Molade-Okoya Thomas Hall, Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere.
The $18,000 prize at the Lagos International Squash Classics, now a 200-point ranking tournament, attracts eight countries, including France, Germany, Egypt, the Czech Republic, England, Hong Kong, and Nigeria.
Aiyepeku said he was relieved to have the competition underway after a five-year break after the COVID-19 pandemic.
"I am relieved and happy that we are able to host this tournament at last."
"This Classic is one of the mainstays of international classics that Lagos State has substantial interest in, and it is a tournament we have been giving our full backing to among the four international classics."
"The Lagos International Squash Classics this year are bigger because we provided a bigger revenue and budget for them."
"Aside from preparing the main squash court for the tournament, we also invested to have another world-class centre court built inside the Molade-Okoya Thomas Hall in the stadium," he said.
Aiyepeku noted that the Lagos International Squash Classics would help the Nigerian players shore up their ranking points.
"I am also happy that this tournament is back because it will help the ranking of our players, especially the Africans, and qualify them to go and play other tournaments around the world."
"This tournament will also encourage the younger ones because Lagos prides itself on building up her talents."
"I appreciate the tenacity of the Nigeria Squash Federation (NSF) and the Association Chairman for their ability to bring players from across the world to participate in the classics," he said.
ASN reports that Nigerian players started on a high note with the first two wins. Nigeria's Onaopemipo Adegoke defeated his French counterpart, Nichols Brice, 3-0: 11-5, 11-5, and 11-7.
Also, Abel Shedrach defeated German Jan Wipperfuerth by 3-1. For the men’s category, the prize money is $12,000 dollars, while for the women’s category, the prize money is $6,000 dollars.
