UAE's Tadej Pogacar adjusts race strategy at Tour de France, trailing Vingegaard by ten seconds
Posted : 18 July 2023
Tadej Pogacar, the rider for UAE Team Emirates, has adjusted his race strategy at this year's Tour de France compared to last year's. After finishing second to Jonas Vingegaard in 2022, Pogacar currently trails Vingegaard by ten seconds in the general classification after 15 stages. However, Pogacar revealed that he has a different approach this time, opting not to go all-out immediately.
Last year, Pogacar felt he was too far behind and pushed too hard. This year, he aims to be more controlled and calculated, saving his powerful attacks for the right moment during the final week of the Tour. He acknowledged that he may make one decisive move but wants to execute it at full intensity.
According to Pogacar, there is no psychological battle between him and Vingegaard, and the yellow jersey will ultimately go to the stronger and fitter rider. He observed that Vingegaard appears composed and not overly nervous, indicating that their physical performance will determine the winner.
Pogacar faced challenges in his preparation for the Tour after fracturing his wrist in a crash during Liege-Bastogne-Liege. While he feels physically fine at the moment, he admitted to experiencing some wrist pain, which might require rest after the Tour's conclusion.
The upcoming stages are critical for Pogacar, with a 22-kilometer time-trial in Stage 16, followed by the challenging mountain stages in Stage 17 and Stage 20. He recognizes the complexity of these stages and highlights the importance of Stage 20 in particular as a potential game-changer in the race.
