U23 Championships Day 3: Norway's Henriette Jaeger leads in women's 400m, with Yemi Mary John achieving personal best

Posted : 15 July 2023
The highly anticipated women's 400m race proved to be one of the most thrilling events of the championships. Norway's Henriette Jaeger led from the start, making up the stagger on Yemi Mary John, the World U20 champion, who was in lane seven. Jaeger held the lead into the home straight, but John gradually closed in, overtaking her in the last 20 meters to secure victory with a personal best of 51.04.

Jaeger's brave effort earned her the silver and a national record of 51.06. European 800m champion Keely Hodgkinson displayed her speed endurance, coming from behind to claim the bronze in 51.76, another personal best.

In the men's 400m, Norway's Håvard Bentdal Ingvaldsen continued his impressive summer form, winning the gold with a time of 45.13. Switzerland's Lionel Spitz took silver in a personal best of 45.27, while Attila Molnar of Hungary settled for bronze in 45.36 after going out strong.

Jeremiah Azu secured another gold for Britain in the men's 100m. With a quick reaction from the blocks, he put pressure on Dutch rival Raphael Bouju and maintained his form beautifully to win in a wind-assisted time of 10.05 (+2.1m/s). Bouju held on for silver in 10.17, and France's Pablo Mateo claimed the bronze in 10.18.

In the women's 100m, N'Ketia Seedo of the Netherlands impressed by winning the gold in 11.22 (+0.6m/s), adding European U23 gold to her World U20 bronze from the previous year. Hungary's Boglarka Takacs took the silver with a time of 11.30, and Switzerland's Melissa Gutschmidt secured the bronze in 11.33.
