U23 Championships Day 3: María Vicente returns to championship podium, wins triple jump, aims for double gold
Posted : 15 July 2023
Spain's talented athlete María Vicente made a triumphant return to the championship podium after four years, winning the women's triple jump with a distance of 14.21m (+1.0m/s), matching her personal best. This victory marked the first half of her quest for double gold, with the long jump event also on her agenda for the week.
While she is renowned for her success in multi-events, including gold medals at various championships, injuries had hindered her progress in recent years. Thus, Vicente was overjoyed to reclaim the gold medal and expressed pride in her team and coach for supporting her comeback.
Sweden's Maja Askag, the European U20 champion, secured the silver with a jump of 13.76m (-0.3m/s), while Jessica Kähärä of Finland added another success story for her nation by clinching the bronze with a fifth-round effort of 13.59m (+0.3m/s).
In the women's 800m, with the absence of Hodgkinson, Spain's Daniela Garcia seized the opportunity to shine. Taking charge with 250m to go, she pulled away from Germany's Lucia Sturm to win in 2:02.96. Finland's Veera Mattila thrilled the home crowd by securing the silver in a personal best time of 2:03.14, and Greece's Georgia-Maria Despollari finished strongly to claim the bronze in 2:04.14.
Norway celebrated another gold medal as Henrik Flatnes dominated the men's long jump with a personal best of 7.96m (+1.3m/s), an improvement from his silver medal performance two years ago in Tallinn. Germany's Simon Batz took the silver with a best jump of 7.72m (+0.5m/s), and Hungary's Matyas Nemeth secured the bronze with a jump of 7.71m (+1.5m/s).
