Posted : 07 November 2023
The PTO European Open is set to return to Ibiza in 2024 on September 28, featuring the defending champions Max Neumann and Anne Haug. This year's event will introduce a new title, 'European champion,' following a partnership between the Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO) and World Triathlon, designating the 2024 PTO Tour as the official World Championship Tour for long-distance triathlon. The announcement was made jointly by the PTO and the Spanish Triathlon Federation (FETRI).
PTO CEO Sam Renouf outlined the strategic vision for the PTO Tour, emphasizing the competition between the world's top triathletes in the new 100km distance (2km swim/80km bike/18km run) in iconic global locations, with broadcasts to a worldwide audience.
The event will feature professional races for the top 20 male and female triathletes on the PTO Tour. Additionally, it will host a PTO European Open 100km race for age group participants, following the successful model introduced in Milwaukee in August 2023.
Last year's European Open witnessed an impressive competition among Olympic champions, including Jan Frodeno, Alistair Brownlee, and Kristian Blummenfelt, with Australian Max Neumann emerging as the victor. The women's race featured a thrilling showdown between Anne Haug and Lucy Charles-Barclay, the new Ironman world champion from Great Britain.
The Spanish Triathlon Federation president, Jose Hidalgo, expressed their satisfaction with renewing the agreement with the PTO to host these races in Ibiza, emphasizing the importance of collaboration among all stakeholders in the sport to further its growth and significance. Detailed information about the 2024 event's route will be disclosed in due course.
