Transgender Women Are Not Permitted to Compete in the Female Division - UK Athletics
Posted : 16 April 2023
Transgender women are not permitted to participate in UK Athletics' contests or events in the female division.
It follows the international ban that World Athletics declared.
When the new World Athletics regulations go into effect at midnight on March 31st, UKA stated that competitions it licenses would be conducted in accordance with those rules.
The statement also stated that it "appreciates the efforts" made by World Athletics to "protect the female category."
After initial reservations, the governing body—which helped shape World Athletics' policy—said it had obtained the "necessary guarantees" that the sporting exception in the Equality Act 2010 applies to the Gender Recognition Act 2004.
Sporting organizations are permitted to discriminate on the basis of sex in "gender-affected activities" and on the basis of gender reassignment where it's required to ensure "fair competition" or "the safety of participants," according to that exception.
UKA stated that while it believes athletics should "remain an open sport," it is "fair" to ban male competitors who have completed puberty from the female division.
Prior to participating in the female division, transgender women were needed under World Athletics' prior regulations to lower their blood testosterone level to a maximum of five nanomoles per liter and maintain it there for a continuous 12-month period.
As aspect of its transitory plans, UKA stated that any transgender athlete who had already entered a competition and complied with its 2021 policy, which applied the World Athletics rules at the time, will remain eligible to compete in that particular competition but cannot accept any prizes or have their results counted.
