Posted : 16 April 2023
British cyclist Ethan Hayter took the early race lead after winning the Tour of the Basque Country's first stage.
In Labastida, Spain, the 24-year-old Ineos Grenadiers rider took the lead from teammate Omar Fraile before sprinting to victory.
"It's amazing," Hayter said.
"My team really backed me even after I wasn't amazing in [the Tour of] Catalunya but I stepped up. They were all in for me today and I just have to thank them."
This is the Londoner's 17th professional stage victory overall and first of the year.
Mauro Schmid of Switzerland, cycling for Soudal-QuickStep, finished second, while Jon Aberasturi of Spain, riding for Trek-Segafredo, finished third.
