Tour de Suisse: Eleonora Camilla Gasparrini won the yellow Leader Jersey

Posted : 20 June 2023
In an exhilarating finish, Eleonora Camilla Gasparrini from UAE Team ADQ sprinted past her competitors in the reduced peloton, overtaking the remaining breakaway rider, Urška Žigart from Team Jayco Alula, just a few meters before the finish line. The yellow Leader Jersey worn by Switzerland's Marlen Reusser was never in jeopardy.

It was a nightmare scenario for Žigart, as her strong lead held for a significant portion of the race but was overtaken with only 50 meters to go. Gasparrini, the victor, experienced immense joy as she surged ahead to claim the victory.

She mentioned that it was the greatest success of her career and dedicated the win to her recently deceased grandfather, whom she had often thought of during the challenging stage.

Stage 3 of the Tour de Suisse Women covered a distance of 120.8 kilometers, making it the longest leg of the four-day tour. The hilly course set a fast pace, and it took nearly two hours for a breakaway to form. Six riders established a lead of approximately one minute, but the team of GC leader Marlen Reusser from Team SD Worx maintained control over the race.

Žigart's attack from the front, approximately 12 kilometers before the finish, appeared promising. However, the chasing group of around 35 riders caught up with her a few meters before the finish line.

Reusser finished eighth, crossing the line with the same time as the winner, successfully defending her yellow jersey heading into the final stage tomorrow.

The competition promises to be thrilling, as only 18 seconds separate the top three riders: Marlen Reusser, Demi Vollering from Team SD Worx, and Elisa Longo Borghini from Trek-Segafredo.

On the last day of the women's Tour de Suisse, the riders will tackle a circuit in and around Toggenburg, starting and finishing in today's host city of Ebnat-Kappel.

The stage profile is even more hilly than the previous one, with a total altitude difference of 1803 meters over 100.8 kilometers.

It includes a 1st Category QOM (Wintersbergstrasse) at the midpoint of the race. Following that, the riders will navigate the exciting series of loops around the finish, with a 2nd Category QOM per lap to be completed three times.
