The Tour de Pologne returned to Karpacz after a 16-year hiatus, and it was Matej Mohorič of Bahrain-Victorious who stole the show with a brilliant performance, winning stage 2.
João Almeida from UAE Team Emirates finished second, followed by Michał Kwiatkowski of INEOS Grenadiers in third place. Mohorič's victory also earned him the top spot in the ORLEN general classification.
The demanding finish lived up to expectations, providing an exciting finale. Rafal Majka made a decisive move, breaking away from the peloton 3.2 km before the finish line, and only Lennert Van Eetvelt from Lotto Dstny managed to keep up with him.
However, the peloton caught up with the two attackers, setting the stage for Mohorič's winning attack. He surged ahead, leaving Almeida to secure the second spot and Kwiatkowski taking third.
At the finish line, Mohorič expressed his satisfaction with the victory, stating that he still felt in top shape after the Tour de France. He credited his success to the right decision-making, staying calm, and having the support of his teammate Caruso. He acknowledged that the upcoming stages would be challenging, especially with an individual time trial at the finish, but he promised to give his best until the last kilometers.
Almeida, while praising Mohorič's performance, also expressed his contentment with his own race, acknowledging the high pace and looking forward to the tough stages ahead. He hoped to position himself well in the general classification and give his best in the time trial.
Kwiatkowski, the best Polish rider in the stage, admitted that the finale was hectic and he couldn't match the accelerations of Mohorič and Almeida. Nevertheless, he was pleased with his performance and vowed to fight until the end, hoping to win in front of his home crowd.
The second stage of the Tour de Pologne UCI WorldTour covered a challenging route from Leszno to Karpacz, spanning 202.9 kilometers and involving a total climb of 2364 meters.
