Tour de France Update: Tadej Pogacar's legs weakened, breaking Breakaway crew's lead

Posted : 07 July 2023
Jumbo-Visma's failure to adapt their plans on Stage 6 of the Tour de France resulted in disappointment for Jonas Vingegaard, who became the yellow jersey holder with mixed feelings, according to Robbie McEwen. Vingegaard had gained time on Tadej Pogacar on the previous stage, but the Slovenian showed improved form and was able to keep up with the pace set by Jumbo-Visma on the Col du Tourmalet.

Dan Lloyd, McEwen, Adam Blythe, and Orla Chennaoui agreed that Jumbo-Visma's initial plan was sound, aiming to capitalize on Pogacar's perceived weakness. However, they criticized the team's failure to adjust their strategy based on Pogacar's resilience. Vingegaard continued to attack, even when it became evident that Pogacar was able to stay with him.

The panel believed that Jumbo-Visma's confidence led to their downfall. They argued that the team should have recognized Pogacar's presence on the Tourmalet and adjusted their approach accordingly. Instead, they continued to push the pace, allowing Pogacar to attack and win the stage, reducing his deficit to Vingegaard.

Despite taking the yellow jersey from Jai Hindley, Vingegaard's position was overshadowed by the missed opportunity to gain a bigger advantage over Pogacar. McEwen described Vingegaard as potentially the most disappointed yellow jersey wearer in history due to the team's failure to adapt their tactics.

While criticism was directed at Jumbo-Visma, the panel also recognized Pogacar's impressive performance. They were amazed by his speed and the intensity of his attack on the climb. His ability to match Vingegaard's moves demonstrated his strength and resilience on the challenging stage.
