Tour de France: Tadej Pogacar wins stage 6, regaining lost time, secures second place
Posted : 07 July 2023
Tadej Pogacar showcased his strength and determination on stage six of the Tour de France, launching a powerful attack on the final climb to Cauterets-Cambasque. The two-time champion soloed to victory, leaving defending champion Jonas Vingegaard behind.
Pogacar's impressive performance allowed him to regain time lost in the previous stage and move into second place overall, just 25 seconds behind Vingegaard in the general classification.
Vingegaard claimed the leader's yellow jersey, displacing Jai Hindley of Australia. Hindley slipped to third in the overall standings after struggling on the penultimate climb up the Col du Tourmalet.
The stage was a challenging one, with a distance of 144.9km from Tarbes to the summit finish at Cauterets-Cambasque.
British riders Simon Yates and Tom Pidcock were among those in a group finishing behind Pogacar.
Pogacar expressed his satisfaction with the stage win, considering it a sweet response and a relief after losing time in the previous day.
He acknowledged the incredible performance by Vingegaard and emphasized the battle that lies ahead, anticipating a fierce competition until the last stage.
Pogacar's comeback sets up an exciting showdown between him and Vingegaard for the remaining 15 stages of the Tour de France.
The next stage, from Mont-de-Marsan to Bordeaux, is expected to end in a sprint finish. It provides an opportunity for Mark Cavendish to potentially break the stage wins record, currently shared with Belgian legend Eddy Merckx at 34 victories.
