Tadej Pogacar made a strong comeback in the battle for the yellow jersey on Stage 9 of the Tour de France, but Jonas Vingegaard held firm to retain his overall lead. Michael Woods emerged victorious on the challenging Puy de Dome climb, executing a perfectly timed ascent to overtake Matteo Jorgenson, who ran out of steam in the final 500 meters and missed out on a top-three finish.
Michael Woods, riding for Israel-Premier Tech, conquered the Puy de Dome to claim the Stage 9 victory. Meanwhile, Tadej Pogacar of UAE Team Emirates put pressure on Jonas Vingegaard from Jumbo-Visma, gaining time in the race for the yellow jersey.
Jumbo-Visma strategically allowed the breakaway group to build a significant advantage of over 16 minutes, ensuring that Pogacar wouldn't be able to gain any additional time at the finish line with bonus seconds.
In a thrilling finale, Michael Woods, who started the final climb 1 minute and 45 seconds behind lone leader Matteo Jorgenson, timed his effort to perfection. He closed the gap on the leading group and ultimately surpassed Jorgenson in the last 500 meters to claim the stage win.
Meanwhile, further down the road, Tadej Pogacar launched a late attack in the final kilometer, quickly distancing himself from Jonas Vingegaard. However, Vingegaard impressively managed to limit the gap to only eight seconds, maintaining his overall lead.
Heading into the first rest day, Vingegaard holds a 17-second advantage over Pogacar in the general classification.
