Tour de France Stage 15: Blythe questions Vingegaard's confidence to attack Pogacar in Tour de France

Posted : 17 July 2023
Adam Blythe has raised doubts about Jonas Vingegaard's confidence to attack Tadej Pogacar at the Tour de France. In Stage 15, Vingegaard defended his 10-second lead in the general classification, successfully thwarting Pogacar's attempts to make a move in the last kilometre of the 179km stage. However, Blythe wonders if Vingegaard lacks the self-assurance to go on the offensive against Pogacar.

During the summit finish, the top three in the general classification - Vingegaard, Pogacar, and Carlos Rodríguez - were closely matched. Pogacar made two attempts to attack in the final kilometre, but Vingegaard impressively closed them down, maintaining his position.

In a discussion on The Breakaway, Blythe expressed his concerns about Vingegaard's hesitancy to attack. He highlighted the absence of any significant attack from the Danish rider and suggested that Vingegaard might fear losing time or lacks the belief in himself to take a more aggressive approach and gain additional time on Pogacar.

However, other analysts on The Breakaway, including Dan Lloyd, praised Vingegaard's performance. They noted how well he responded to Pogacar's attacks, staying comfortably on his wheel even in challenging gradients.

Lloyd acknowledged the mental aspect of the race, highlighting Vingegaard's confidence in pushing past Pogacar's efforts when bonus seconds were no longer available.

With Monday marking the final rest day, the Tour de France will resume on Tuesday with an individual time trial. Vingegaard's ability to assert himself against Pogacar in the upcoming stages will remain a topic of interest in the competition.
