Tour De France Femmes Stage 5: Ricarda Bauernfeind wins Stage 5, Lotte Kopecky maintaining yellow jersey
Posted : 28 July 2023
In Stage 5 of the Tour de France Femmes, Ricarda Bauernfeind of Canyon//SRAM Racing secured an impressive solo victory. After numerous breakaway attempts, Bauernfeind took her chance and launched off the front with 36km to go. Initially joined by Claire Steels, Bauernfeind dropped her fellow escapee and built a gap of over a minute.
Marlen Reusser of SD Worx tried to lead the peloton to catch Bauernfeind, but the German rider still had a 25-second advantage with 2km left. As the chasers sat up, Bauernfeind sealed her triumph.
The day started with unfortunate news for SD Worx as sprinter Lorena Wiebes withdrew from the race due to illness. Several other riders also abandoned during the stage.
The stage saw an early breakaway group of 15 riders, which later reduced to 11. As the race progressed, the pace picked up, and the lead group merged with the peloton. Bauernfeind then launched her successful attack.
Bauernfeind's solo effort earned her a well-deserved victory as she crossed the finish line in disbelief. She became the youngest rider to win a stage at the Tour de France Femmes. Reusser took second place, and Liane Lippert finished third.
Despite the time penalty, Lotte Kopecky retained the yellow jersey, holding on to the overall lead. Kastelijn will wear the polka dot jersey for Stage 6, and Moolman-Pasio continues to wear the green points jersey on behalf of Kopecky.
