Tour De France Femmes 2023 Stage 3: Lorena Wiebes wins Stage 3, Julie Van de Velde nearly caused a major upset

Posted : 26 July 2023
Lorena Wiebes secured victory in Stage 3 of the 2023 Tour de France Femmes, with an impressive performance, but Julie Van de Velde came close to causing a major upset. Van de Velde launched a daring attack with 59km remaining, building a lead of over two minutes. However, the peloton slowly reeled her in, and with 3km to go, she still had over half a minute on the bunch.

Wiebes, determined not to be denied, benefited from the support of her SD Worx teammates, setting up a bunch sprint. She capitalized on the opportunity and clinched the victory. Marianne Vos took second place, and Lotte Kopecky finished third, extending her lead in the yellow jersey.

Throughout the stage, there were several attacks and breakaways, but none could create a significant gap. Van de Velde's solo attempt was the most notable, and she even held a lead of over two minutes at one point. However, the peloton gradually closed in on her.

Despite the peloton closing in, Van de Velde's lead increased at times, showing her determination and earning her the most combative rider prize. Unfortunately, her efforts were not enough, and the peloton caught up with her just a few hundred meters before the finish line.

In the end, Wiebes emerged as the stage winner, adding another victory to her Tour de France record. Kopecky retained her yellow jersey as the overall leader, with Liane Lippert in second place, trailing 55 seconds behind. Van Vleuten improved her position but is still 1'05" behind the yellow jersey.

Van de Velde's impressive ride earned her the Queen of the Mountains jersey, and Cédrine Kerbaol kept the young rider jersey. Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio continued to wear the green points jersey on behalf of Kopecky.

SD Worx strengthened their general classification pursuit, gaining an additional six seconds over Lippert. The race continues with the riders preparing for stage four.
