Tour de France Femmes 2023 Stage 2: Liane Lippert wins second stage, showing sprinting prowess on hilly route
Posted : 25 July 2023
Germany's Liane Lippert showcased her sprinting prowess, securing victory on the second stage of the Tour de France Femmes. The 152km hilly route from Clermont-Ferrand to Mauriac was challenging, especially due to the wet conditions.
Belgian rider Lotte Kopecky, who triumphed in stage one, made a strong push in the sprint towards the finish line. However, Lippert, aged 25, displayed incredible speed, overtaking Kopecky to claim the stage victory. Silvia Persico secured the third spot on the podium.
Expressing her delight, Lippert stated, "It's so special. I am really happy and proud of this." Despite facing two crashes in the neutral zone and during the climb, Lippert remained resilient with the support of her team. Their composure in the rainy conditions played a crucial role in her success.
As a rider who performs well in wet weather, Lippert embraced the rain and found it to her advantage. Kopecky, on the other hand, retained her overall lead in the race, holding a 49-second advantage over Lippert, who currently sits in second place.
The upcoming third stage is set to cover a 147.2km route from Collonges-la-Rouge to Montignac-Lascaut in Dordogne. The Tour de France Femmes consists of eight stages, culminating with the final stage on Sunday.
