Tour De France 2023: Stage 4 of Tour de France ended chaotic with crashes, leaving Cavendish fifth
Posted : 05 July 2023
Stage 4 of the Tour de France ended in chaotic fashion at the Circuit Paul Armagnac in Nogaro, with three crashes in the final kilometers causing havoc in the peloton.
Mark Cavendish managed to stay upright and finished in fifth place, an improvement from the previous day, but he described the events as "carnage."
Jasper Philipsen of Alpecin-Deceuninck emerged as the eventual winner, securing back-to-back stage victories for the Belgian.
The stage had been relatively calm until the dramatic finale unfolded on the motor-racing circuit. As the intensity increased in the closing kilometers, multiple riders went down, creating a challenging situation for all contenders.
Cavendish's fifth-place finish prevented him from claiming a record 35th stage win, but given the circumstances, it was a tough task for the British rider.
Reflecting on the chaotic scene, Cavendish expressed his astonishment, highlighting that most teams had plans for the final stretch, but none seemed to go as intended, except for Jumbo-Visma successfully navigating the narrow roads earlier.
Cavendish analyzed the composition of the final group, assessing the presence of various riders and their teammates. Ultimately, his strategy to anticipate the moves of riders like Mads Pedersen and Jasper Stuyven didn't materialize, and he found himself trying to secure the best position in the sprint.
Cavendish also expressed concern for his teammate Luis Leon Sanchez, suspecting that he had been involved in one of the crashes and intending to check on his well-being.
