Tour De France 2023 Stage 12: Fabio Jakobsen withdraws from Tour de France due to injuries; Philipsen wins

Posted : 13 July 2023
Fabio Jakobsen of Soudal Quick-Step has been forced to withdraw from the Tour de France due to lingering injuries sustained during a crash on Stage 4.

The Dutch cyclist suffered a heavy fall on the motor-racing circuit in Nogaro and has been struggling since then.

After careful consideration and discussions with his team, Jakobsen has made the difficult decision to end his Tour de France journey.

In an official statement released by Soudal Quick-Step, Jakobsen expressed his disappointment and explained the rationale behind his withdrawal: "Considering the consequences of my crash on stage four and after consulting with the team, we have decided that it is in my best interest to stop my participation in the Tour de France.

Unfortunately, my recovery is not progressing as expected, and my body has not been healing properly from the injuries. It is with great sadness that I have to leave the race, especially since I had high aspirations and wanted to perform at my best alongside my team. I will now take some time to recuperate, clear my mind, and hopefully regain my form later in the season."

The 26-year-old Jakobsen had hoped to build on his previous stage victory in last year's Tour. However, he has been unable to challenge the dominant sprinter Jasper Philipsen of Alpecin–Deceuninck, who has claimed victory in four stages thus far.

Jakobsen is expected to part ways with his current team at the end of the season, as he revealed in an interview with NOS earlier in the Tour.

He mentioned having a conversation with team manager Patrick Lefevere on the bus, where they mutually acknowledged that he would need to find a new team. J

akobsen expressed his gratitude and deep attachment to Soudal-QuickStep, acknowledging the team's significance in his career. The search for a new team is ongoing, and Jakobsen anticipates making an announcement on August 1st, signaling the next chapter of his cycling journey.
